“We are not held back by the love we didn’t receive in the past, but by the love we’re not extending in the present.”
It’s very tempting to use old grievances as an excuse to stay stuck. To lick old wounds. To take time to heal. To complain that you were never loved enough, or the way you wanted, so you must hold back now.
But I would argue that you can change your entire life at the drop of a hat by letting go of that identity right now.
Did you hear a voice in your head say, “That’s easy for him to say… he never had a mother, father, abuser, childhood, life situation as horrible as I did…” If you heard something along those lines, I’m going to tell you that this voice is not your friend. This voice has you around its finger and will play you as a victim to keep you stuck forever.
Then how do you let go of this identity right now?
Imagine the love you want. Imagine how another person filled with this love would treat you. What would this person’s heart be feeling toward you? Picture the look in their eyes. Envision what this person would say to you from a place of unconditional love and acceptance.
Hold that visualization and feel it in your heart. Close your eyes and tap into it. Bask in it.
Now walk around and extend that love in the present: To others, the world, and yourself.
“Grant that I may not so much seek
To be loved, as to love…”
— St. Francis of Assisi
When you become a walking, breathing manifestation of love, there is nothing left over to experience loss. Nothing to hold you back.
You are simply overflowing love.
