“When someone beats a rug, the blows are not against the rug, but against the dust in it.”
At the monastery where I trained, we had a saying that went something like this:
“If you had people in your life that treated you as badly as the voice in your head treats you, you would have gotten rid of them a long, long time ago.”
Many folks have mentors, coaches, personal trainers, and loved ones who support them. Lord knows we could use one inside our own heads!
We pull through for others — we’re even kind and compassionate to complete strangers like the grocery clerk — yet when it comes to ourselves, we’re left with this crappy, annoying, fear-driven, constantly dissatisfied, whiny voice that berates and puts us down all day long.
Then, when it gets tired of us, it goes on to others. Have you noticed? It’s an equal opportunity abuser!
So remember, if you’re feeling bad, chances are good The Anti-Coach has whooshed into your life and left you a little something in your punch bowl. Time to fling it into the fan and take back your life!
